School Lockers

When in school you have to have a place to put your stuff. When I was in elementary school we had our desk in which to store our stuff, but we also pretty much stayed in the same room all day. When it came time to go to high school though, we had to have school lockers to store books between classes and as a place to keep our coats and other belongings. They seem like a great idea, and they are, but there are some issues I have always had with them.

The worst thing about school lockers is the lock. Not every school I went to had them, but many came so that you could put a lock on if you wished. I never wanted to put a lock on my school lockers, and I never had a problem with theft. I went to a small school though, and theft was never a huge issue for anyone. I never left anything worth stealing in there anyway, so I guess it was never a worry to begin with for us.

 Quote of the Day
The organic fundamental error of humanism was that it desired to educate the common people (on whom it looked down)It’s fairly obvious that American education is a cultural flop. Americans are not a well-educated people culturally, and their vocational education often has to be learned all over again after they leave school and college. On the other hand, they have open quick minds and if their education has little sharp positive value, it has not the stultifying effects of a more rigid training.
—Raymond Chandler (1888–1959)

I went to one school that had combination locks on the school lockers. There was no way around it. I always had trouble. If I could actually remember my combination I would get into my locker, but sometimes that didn’t even work. The locks on these school lockers were hard to use, and if you were off even a tiny bit the locker would not open. I was late for class so many times that I started leaving my locker door open a touch so that I didn’t have to fight with the lock.

When I did manage to get mine open, I had another common problem that some have with school lockers. Once in a while there would be an avalanche. I was always late and always in a hurry. This meant that every piled up in there, and if I didn’t have time to clean it out, things would slide out and land on my feet. It’s a common pitfall of school lockers though, and I know I was not the only one. Many times we had just two minutes in between class, and who wants to stay after to clean out school lockers? The worst part was that these lockers were stacked two high. The boy who had his locker under me often had things land on his head. It’s a miracle that he spoke to me at all.
