Young children live in a world that has always had the Internet. It is an interesting comparison to how I grew up. There were no computers for a while, and certainly no Internet. I remember seeing my first computer in grade school, but we only did some learning games on special occasions. That was a rare occurrence. In high school we learned a little more about them, but we still used typewriters for typing class. Children today will use computers in school quite often, and even before they begin school, they are using games online for kids that they can use to learn.
You can find all sorts of things online for kids. Not only are there learning games for almost every single age group, there are also many home schooling sites that have popped up for both the children and the parents. These are great resources. I have been going through some of them to find learning things for my daughter. She starts kindergarten next year, and I have found out there that is a lot that she needs to know before she begins. This is all stuff that I learned in school, but apparently these are things that are now required to enter.

A good education ought to help people to become both more receptive to and more discriminating about the world: seeing, feeling, and understanding more, yet sorting the pertinent from the irrelevant with an ever finer touch, increasingly able to integrate what they see and to make meaning of it in ways that enhance their ability to go on growing.

Though the Internet is a wealth of great information online for kids, there are things that you have to watch out for. Just like in your own community, there may be dangerous types lurking around where children are known to be. There are those who pretend to be teenagers (or even younger) in order to get close to children. If your child is using message boards online for kids, make sure you monitor everything they are doing and know who they are talking to. It is vital that you keep an eye on what is being said.
However, this does not mean that you should keep your child from the wealth of things online for kids. There are great learning tools, and so many different things they can try. You can teach them to use the Internet correctly, and teach them whatever safety rules you think are important. You shouldn’t stop them from going online, as it looks like the Internet is here to stay. Instead, teach them to be safe and know exactly what they are doing and what they are saying in communications. If you stay on top of things, you can keep them safe and happy.
