One of my biggest regrets when I was going to college was not getting a computer science degree. Although I was at one of the top computer science universities, I was interested in other areas. You see, I have always wanted to write and form a career around literature. At the time, I thought a creative writing degree would serve me best. Nowadays, I see things a little bit differently. If I'd gone to a top computer university, it would have made things a lot easier for me. It would have provided me with a steady source of income for my writing career.
The problem is that, even in a top computer science university, it is hard to tell if the program is any good until you have completed it. This was the problem I ran into in school. The first couple classes were what are called “weeder classes”. That means that they were designed to discourage people from getting a computer science degree. You see, there were so many computer science students in the college that they made the first few classes unusually hard and tedious. The hope was to discourage people. In my case, it worked. I was thrown in way over my head, and I didn't give it enough of a chance.

You seem to think that I am adapted to nothing but the sugar-plums of intellect and had better not try to digest anything stronger.... a writer of popular sketches in magazines; a lecturer before Lyceums and College societies; a dabbler in metaphysics, poetry, and art, than which I would rather die, for if it has come to that, alas! verily, as you say, mediocrity has fallen on the name of Adams.

Not all of the top computer science universities have this approach. As a matter of fact, some of the top computer science schools do things much differently. I have always thought weeder classes are a bad way to do things. There's nothing wrong with making an educational program difficult. It is just that the purpose of the educational program should not be to scare people away. The top computer science universities can make you work hard, but they should also remind you of the rewards in store. Computer science degrees are as useful as ever. Computer programmers often make 60,000 dollars or more a year within a couple years of graduating from school.
If you're contemplating entering one of the top computer science universities, however, you should make sure that computer programming is your passion. I have met a number of experts who insist that the best programmers are those who start off programming for fun. If you dive right into a computer science programming course without ever having time to mess around with the programming language, you won't realize the joy that you can take in writing programs.
